Steven Miles, a Boulder photographer and neighbor to the Ramseys sued for libel, slander and intentional infliction of emotional distress, Miles' complaint also names as defendants two of the tabloid's reporters, John South and David Wright. The first of two articles Miles states ran Oct. 21, 1997 written by John South and David Wright and the article quotes an unnamed source saying, "John and Patsy will claim that the real killer is a neighbor, Stephen Miles, who was once arrested and accused of a sex offense against a minor." A second story, written by David Wright and published November 11, 1997 refers to a list of potential suspects allegedly given to police by the Ramseys' attorneys. "Included on that list are dozens of pedophiles and sex offenders living in Boulder. One of them, gay photographer Stephen Miles." Tuesday, October 20, 1998 John Ramsey gave a deposition on the case. On February 3, 1999, U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer found no "clear and convincing proof" of actual malice by the National Enquirer and two of its reporters in two stories about Stephen Miles and the case was dismissed.
