Lawsuits John and Patsy Ramsey vs Steve Thomas |
March 29, 2001 John and Patsy Ramsey vs Steve Thomas Lawsuit for $80 Million dollars filed March 29, 2001 |
John Ramsey Patsy Ramsey Oct 19, 1999 Attorney hired L. Lin Wood |
John and Patsy Ramsey claim they have been libeled, slandered, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and deprivation of Constitutional rights in an $80 million libel suit against a former police detective Steve Thomas, claiming he falsely identified the Ramseys as prime suspects in his book about the case. John and Patsy claim that Steve Thomas's book, "JonBenet: Inside the Ramsey Investigation," and what they consider his high-profile campaign unequivocally calls Patsy Ramsey the killer of her daughter. The Ramsey's attorney is L. Lin Wood, the lawyer who represents Richard Jewell, the man falsely accused of planting a bomb at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta Steve Thomas' attorney, Daniel Petrocelli of Los Angeles. Petrocelli won a $33.5 million verdict for the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman after making mincemeat of O.J. Simpson on the witness stand. John and Patsy Ramsey are seeking $65 million from Thomas, publisher St. Martin's Press, and several other defendants, including unidentified Boulder police officials whom the Ramseys allege supplied Thomas with material for his work. The suit accuses Thomas of securing a six-figure book contract with the promise he would say Patsy Ramsey killed six-year-old JonBenet, and John Ramsey covered up the crime. Ramsey v. Thomas, No. 1:01-CV-0801 (N.D. Ga. March 29, 2001) |

On July 7, 2001, a Daily Times article titled, "Ramsey suits disputed","on July 5, 2001, Steve Thomas' attorney, Chuck Diamond, a Los Angeles lawyer filed to have a federal court in Georgia to dismiss a defamation suit filed against him by John and Patsy Ramsey." "Thomas' attorneys moved this week to dismiss the suit saying Thomas, his co-author and their publisher don't have any connection to Georgia, so they shouldn't be subjected to a suit filed there. L. Lin Wood, the Ramseys' attorney in Atlanta, said he'll use the case to challenge a Georgia state law limiting defamation suits against out-of-state residents." |
