May 22, 1997 Theft of the Morgue Log with entry showing JonBenet Ramsey's name |
J.T. Colfax (James Michael Thompson), 34 years old was arrested on May 22, 1997 for theft under $100 and criminal mischief for stealing pages from a coroner's log book showing the arrival of JonBenet's body at the county morgue. Colfax was employed as a cadaver transporter by a Denver company and he had a call to go to the Boulder County morgue for a pick up and as he was waiting around he noticed the log book and the entry with JonBenet's name. He said he tore the sheet out of the log book to take it as a souvenir of a famous murder case. But the life and saga of J.T.Colfax was a little more complicated than just being charged with criminal mischief and theft. Just a few weeks prior on April 30, 1997 J.T. Colfax was arrested when he attempted to walk out of a Safeway Photo Processing store without paying for the rolls of photos he picked up. The photos turned out to be pictures of corpses with signs attached with phrases such as, "Getting Fired Isn't the End of the World," "Yee Haw," and "Happy Birthday." Colfax took took photos of a corpse with party favors. The photos are artworks, JT said. With the Corpse abuse charges and now the new theft charges associated with the JonBenet morgue log, Colfax was doomed to be dragging into the JonBenet Ramsey murder case and to rush things along Colfax decided to set fire to the Ramseys 15th Street home not because he had anything against the Ramseys, he said, but to get back at the authorities. After plea bargain arrangements, Colfax was charged with theft and served two years in the Boulder County jail that started on January 15, 1998 and Colfax was released on July 13, 1999. During his time in jail, Colfax wrote a daily diary over a 10 month period that was posted on the Internet and with the help of a friend at the time, Colfax became somewhat a side show celebrity as he maintained media communication within the Boulder County jail. |
