Ramsey Update #85: Ramsey Investigation Takes New Direction
Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner today announced that the JonBenet Ramsey investigation will be taking a new direction. Boulder County District Attorney Mary Keenan and Chief Beckner have agreed that the District Attorney will follow-up on new leads and information in the case. This will involve the assignment of DA investigators who have not previously worked on the Ramsey case. This is an investigative strategy that has been discussed in the District Attorney’s Office and the Police Department for several weeks.
"The primary reason for this change is an attempt to further the investigation in a positive manner," said Chief Beckner. "The interests of the Boulder Police Department have always been to do what is in the best interests of the investigation. This is a strategy to address concerns expressed by the Ramseys and their attorney that the Boulder Police Department is not following up additional leads. This may provide the Ramseys and their attorney greater comfort in forwarding what they believe is new information or leads that need to be investigated."
"It is our hope that by changing the dynamics of the investigation, information maintained by the Ramseys will be forwarded to the DA’s Office for follow-up," stated Chief Beckner. "Obviously, it is impossible to investigate information you do not have access to. We also realize that a fresh look at the case from time to time is healthy and could lead to new progress in the investigation. This will be the fourth time over the course of the 6-year investigation that changes in strategy and responsibility have been made in an effort to further the investigation. Each time, we have had some success in moving the case forward."
Chief Beckner further stated, "It is important for all of us to remember that the ultimate goal is to solve the case for the victim, JonBenet Ramsey. We are willing to try just about any strategy in order to accomplish that goal. We will continue to work in cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office and provide consultation as needed. Any tips or new information received by the Police Department will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for follow-up."
"We don’t care how or who solves this case, and if this helps, then it is the right thing to do," added Beckner.

Summation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a complete read of all Ramsey case press releases by the City of Boulder, a very interesting endeavor, go to http://www3.ci.boulder.co.us/comm/pressrelease/indexr.html
Clearly, the thrust of the BPD investigation from 1996 through 2002 when it lost custody of the case was not singular in focus but actively investigated ALL leads and parties of interest thoroughly, contrary to the RST's continual claims that only the Ramseys were "targeted." You will recall this alleged bias on the part of BPD was the sole impetus for Lin Wood's threat of lawsuit against Boulder and Keenan throughout this time, which eventually led to the Dec. 2002 official press release.
And clearly, the City of Boulder would never pay more than $1.7 Million Dollars on an investigation that wasn't so thorough. Had the City of Boulder officials suspected in any way that BPD was conducting an improper investigation, it would have convened a special task force to investigate the investigation. At no time did that ever occur, and at no time did the City of Boulder ever demand any thorough accounting or proof from BPD of those reported expenditures. So clearly, the City of Boulder was satisfied that the BPD investigation of the Ramsey case was at all times proper and appropriate.
And, more interestingly, at no time have the Ramseys or any of their representatives made any formal demand for any such accountings from the BPD or the City of Boulder to substantiate its claims of bias. Surely one would think that if the RST truly believed the BPD investigation was so improper, they would want a formal review and opinion of it before filing that multi-million dollar libel suit LW threatened. But, like the "proof" that could have been obtained regarding use of a stun gun on JB, they instead continue to choose not to act, merely perpetuate slanderous, libelous opinions. One would think that the City of Boulder would file suit against the Ramseys for such illegal conduct, if for nothing more than to prove once and for all that BPD's reputation is indeed intact and to terminate the continual whining of the RST.
Instead, the city and state officials crumpled under threats of lawsuits from Lin Wood in behalf of the Ramseys to allow the sullied public image of the BPD to remain. It still hangs in the air polluting that Rocky Mountain High. What's worse, they have remained utterly silent to the extent that a perfectly professional police investigation that led to Gov. Owens' public statement in 1999 that the Ramseys were the ONLY logical suspects in the case was then transferred to what has proven to be the most incompetent "investigation" yet of this case.
At no time has the BDA ever published publicly any statistics regarding costs expended in its investigation of the case or any tallies of what efforts have constituted their investigation. Instead, Mary Keenan's only public commentary consistently has been a "no talk" policy by the BDA, obviously preventing any fodder for lawsuits but also removing any public accountability for their efforts. Instead, the BDA has spent the last 2 years indulging the "concerns" of the Ramseys and their families by following up on every ridiculous "lead" provided them by the RST to avoid the accusations made against the BPD. The last "lead," the Tracey documentary intentionally misstating relationships between the BDA and Ramsey investigators, and even more shocking, publicly naming and disgracing an innocent man that even the BDA has never perceived as anyone of interest in the Ramsey investigation, has got to be the last straw of a 2 year indulgence of the Ramseys just to avoid a lawsuit.
And Governor Owens has not uttered a peep since 1999. Even after FFJ took its concerns right to his doorstep in Spring, 2004, the good governor has refused to even address them in any fashion.
It would seem Lin Wood's greatest skill is to abuse others while creating such a stench of slander and libel himself, rather than any truly competent, professional legal skills.
Why won't the good people of Boulder come to the rescue of its police department? Why won't the good people of Boulder demand accountability of its district attorney office?
How long has the state of Colorado been utterly impotent and therefore derelict in its official duties that two filthy rich nobodies could bring it to its knees to grovel in the dirt at every word from their junkyard dog attorney?
And whatever happened to Gov. Owens, Mark Beckner's and Mary's Keenan's resolve to move this case forward to prosecution?

How has Mary Keenan's handling of the Ramsey case exhonerated the City of Boulder, the BPD or the BDA over the last 4 years? It hasn't. The City of Boulder and its officials, as Gov. Owens, are the laughing stock of the country. Alex Hunter laid a great foundation for it while in office, and Keenan's stunts in the CU coed case have only compounded it.
How has Mary Keenan's handling of the Ramsey case fulfilled their original intent of moving the case to prosecution? It hasn't. The case has gone nowhere and the BDA has conducted NO FURTHER investigation of the Ramseys themselves.
How has Mary Keenan's handling of the Ramsey case done anything but continually indulge the abusive whims of two murder suspects? It hasn't, as JonBenet's memory, the public and numerous innocent people have had to suffer the torture of Lou Smit's constantly morphing intruder theories.
It would have been utterly simple to assign one BDA investigator to work with Smit to keep the Ramseys at bay, while the remainder of a proper investigative staff continued to work the case evidence prepared by BPD that clearly implicates the Ramseys. This would have been a fair and balanced investigation, as BPD conducted previously. But instead, Mary Keenan has done nothing about the Ramseys but spoon feed them.
I'm tired of hearing all these officials for the last 4 years claim that the only goal, the only interest, is in getting justice for JonBenet Ramsey. They have been talking out of both sides of their mouths, trying to pacify the public while doing nothing but pacifying the Ramseys. Their ONLY interest has been to sidestep lawsuits, to hell with JonBenet, ethics, the Ramseys and the public interest.
Perhaps it is time for a new DA in Boulder who cares more about the City's reputation than a vapid lawsuit from an incompetent, abusive, sleazy lawyer, who cares more about restoring the power of city and state government to elected officials than murder suspects, who cares more about obtaining justice for murdered children than reputation, power, political success or getting away with infanticide.
Where is Jason Savela and what is his take on the state of Boulder?
