EXTERNAL EXAMINATION: The subject is received in a body bag with appropriate identification. The subject is unclothed. The hands are bagged. About the neck, there is a yellow-metal necklace. The decedent appears to be of normal development, an adequately nourished and hydrated, adult, and white female weighing 154 pounds and measuring 65 in. in length. The body is cold to touch. Rigor mortis is absent. Postmortem lividity is purple and fixed over the anterior surfaces of the body. There is fingerprint blanching noted over the right medial breast and blanching over the areola and central portion of the left breast, the left thigh, and calf. The hair is long, brown, and straight. The hair is soaked with blood. The eyes are closed. The irides are brown. The corneae are cloudy. The sclerae are white. The nasal skeleton is intact. There is a foam cone emanating from the nostrils. The lips and frenulum are intact. The lips are purple. The teeth are natural. Dentition is in good repair. The tongue is partially clenched between the teeth. Each ear lobe is pierced once. The chest is symmetrical. The breasts are of normal development. No palpable masses or nipple discharge is noted. The abdomen is soft and mildly protuberant. The upper extremities are symmetrical. The fingernails are short and clean. There is wrinkling of the fingers and palmar surface of the left hand. |

The external genitalia are that of a normal, adult female. No trauma is noted. The lower extremities are symmetrical. The toenails are short and clean. The back and buttocks are symmetrical and free of significant injury. EXTERNAL EVIDENCE OF INJURY: 1. On the left parieto-occipital scalp, there is a 1-in., blunt laceration. 2. On the left buttocks, there is an irregularly shaped, red abrasion measuring 3 in. x 1 in. in greatest dimension. 3. On the left lower quadrant of the abdomen, their are 3, oval-shaped, purple contusions ranging from 1 in. to 2 in. in greatest dimension. 4. On the left anterior thigh, there is a faint, 1 in. by ¾ in., purple contusion. 5. On the mid shins, there is a 3/8 in., circular-shaped, purple contusion on each. 6. On the right outer wrist, there are ½ in. and ¾ in. linear, red abrasions. 7. On the dorsum of the right 1st finger, there is a circular-shaped, 1/8 in. abrasion. 8. On the left elbow, there is a circular-shaped, 3/8 in. red abrasion. EVIDENCE OF MEDICAL TREATMENT: 1. On the left upper back, right upper back, and left lateral back, there is an electrocardiogram lead. INTERNAL EXAMINATION: Body cavities: The body is entered through a Y-shaped incision. The internal organs are in their normal anatomic positions and normal anatomic relationships. No excess fluid is seen in the pericardial sac, pleural spaces, or peritoneal cavity. The pannicular fat measures 5.1 cm. Neck Organs: The tongue is pink-tan and soft. The hyoid bone, thyroid and epiglottic cartilages are intact. The larynx and its lumen are patent. The vocal chords are intact. The strap muscles are free of hemorrhage. Cardiovascular System: The heart weighs 260 g. There is a mild amount of epicardial fat. The myocardium is red-tan and homogenous. The left ventricle measures 1.0 cm. The right ventricle measures 0.3 cm. The valves and chordae tendinae are thin and delicate, except for mild thickening |

of the leaflets of the mitral valve. The chambers are of normal size. The septa are intact. The coronary ostia are patent. The coronary arteries pursue their normal anatomic course. No atheromatous plaques or thrombi are seen. The great vessels are patent and pursue their normal anatomic course. The intima of the aorta is red-tan and smooth with hemolysis. Respiratory System: The trachea and bronchi are patent. The mucosa is tan and smooth. The lungs combined weigh 900 g. The pleural surface is smooth and gray. The parenchyma is red-purple and soft with mild congestion and moderate edema. No areas of consolidation, tumor, infarct, or fibrosis are noted. The pulmonary arteries and veins are patent and unremarkable. No thromboemboli are seen. Hepatobiliary System: The liver weighs 1,530 g. The capsule is smooth and glistening. The parenchyma is red-brown, soft and congested. No tumors or fibrosis is noted. The gallbladder and biliary tree are patent. No stones are identified. Gastrointestinal System: The esophagus is without special note. The mucosa is gray-white. The stomach contains approximately 2 cc of tannish-colored fluid. The rugal folds are gray-tan and partially flattened. The duodenum, small and large intestines contain their normal contents. The serosal surface is smooth and glistening. The mesenteric fat is yellow-tan and unremarkable. The appendix is present and unremarkable. Endocrine System: The pituitary is of normal size. The thyroid is red-tan and soft. The pancreas is tan and lobulated. The pancreatic duct is patent. The adrenal glands have a yellow cortex and brown medulla. Musculoskeletal System: The muscles are red-tan and soft. The bones are white-tan and hard. No fractures of the spine or pelvis are noted. Genitourinary System: The kidneys combined weigh 270 g. The capsules strip with ease. The cortex is red-brown, smooth and congested. The corticomedullary junction is sharp. The pelves, ureters, and urinary bladder are patent. Hematolymphoid System: The spleen weighs 140 g. The capsule is smooth and gray. The parenchyma is red-purple, soft and congested. No tumor or fibrosis is noted. No significant lymphadenopathy is seen. The bone marrow is red-brown and unremarkable. Reproductive System: The uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes weigh 130 g. No pathologic abnormalities are noted. No intrauterine pregnancy is noted. Central Nervous System: No other lacerations are seen on the scalp. The skull is intact. No subdural or epidural hemorrhage is seen. The leptomeninges are clear. The subarachnoid space is unremarkable. The brain weighs 1,160 g. There is flattening of the gyri with notching of the cerebellar tonsils. Serial coronal sections of the brain reveal no other pathologic abnormalities. The ventricles are of normal size. The cerebrospinal fluid is clear. The cerebellum is of normal development. The arteries at the base of the brain are patent. |

Samples of fluids and tissue are submitted for toxicologic analysis. A DNA card is submitted for storage. A stock of tissue is submitted for storage. DIAGNOSES: 1. Cerebral edema with cerebellar tonsillar notching. 2. Moderate pulmonary edema. 3. Water in the ethmoid sinuses. 4. Hepatic, renal and splenic congestion. 5. Laceration of the posterior scalp. 6. Mild mitral valve thickening. 7. No tumor, significant trauma, infection, or congenital anomalies. 8. Toxicology is negative. OPINION: In consideration of the circumstances surrounding her death, the available medical history, and autopsy findings, the death of this 40-year-old, white female, Kathleen Savio, is ascribed to Drowning. Comment: the laceration to posterior scalp may have been related to a fall in which she struck her head. |

Place of examination: Crest Hill, IL.
