TT: So, you took painting classes in the fall.
PR: Right.
TT: What kind of classes?
PR: Down at CU
TT: Water color or oil, or…
PR: I think you could do either one, acrylic or oils.
TT: OK. Which did you do?
PR: I started out with oil, but then I changed to acrylic because it got on my car when I (inaudible). It smelled real bad, so I switched.
TT: Do you normally keep the painting supplies in that (inaudible) area where the checkered board stuff is?
PR: Yeah, we had it there for a long time, and then around the holidays, I moved all that to the basement.
TT: OK.
PR: Ah, cause we put coat racks and things in there for parties.
TT: OK. What part of the basement do you recall moving the painting supplies to?
PR: I don’t remember. I think Linda took all that own there. I think it was kind of, I don’t remember. (Inaudible) was storing everything, I don’t remember where she put it.
TT: Is that a (inaudible), how much stuff are taking about?
PR: Well, I had a bunch of big canvasses; had a Santa by the lawn, and a big easel, a big tall easel; and then like a white caddy kind of thing, like a plastic thing that I had a bunch of paint in. It would have been a lot of stuff to flip over.
TT: So some place in the basement is where (inaudible) all that?
PR: Yeah.

TT: Okay. Before the police arrived and after you guys checked of Burke did either one of you run through the house and check the house at all?
PR: John, I remember him running, going like to the doors, various doors, cause I kept saying how did they get in, how did they get in? And he uh, checked some of the doors I remember. The door to the garage, you know, from the coat room there.
TT: Um hum.
PR: I don’t you know, I just remember him kind of going around checking. I think he went down to the butler kitchen there. Checked, I don’t, you know, I wasn’t watching he did.
TT: Did he ever make a comment about being, any of the doors being unlocked to you? Did he find any doors unlocked that you recall?
PR: He didn’t say that he did.
TT: Okay.
PR: I don’t remember him saying, you know, he didn’t say Oh I found it or something. I don’t remember him . . .

June 1998 John Ramsey Interrogation by Lou Smit and Mike Kane (Butler Kitchen)

0089
19 LOU SMIT: Where were those presents kept?
20 JOHN RAMSEY: Well there were some presents
21 in a little, what we call, the butler's kitchen,
22 but it was a lower level kitchen. There were some
23 presents some presents down there. In fact, I
24 think I wrapped some Christmas day to take to the
25 airplane to get ready for the next day. I think

0090
1 those were there.
2 LOU SMIT: So when you wrapped them, the
3 items, you wrapped them, where would you get the
4 wrapping paper and all the things?
5 JOHN RAMSEY: I think I could have either
6 gotten it from there or down in the basement.
7 Patsy had by the (INAUDIBLE) a bunch of wrapping
8 paper and stuff,
and I think there was some there
9 in the butler's kitchen area as well. I might have
10 even went downstairs to get the paper and stuff. I
11 don't remember. That's where a lot of them would
12 have been.
13 LOU SMIT: I think what I'm trying to get
14 at is, did you go into the wine cellar at that
15 time in order to get any of these items?
16 JOHN RAMSEY: I don't remember. It wouldn't
17 have been out of the question or impossible.

(SNIP)

0140
1 LOU SMIT: Now before the police come, you
2 say you go back upstairs and you put on a shirt
3 and pair of pants. Do you remember how Patsy was
4 dressed at that time? Or do you have any
5 recollection at all of how she was dressed?
6 JOHN RAMSEY: I don't. No.
7 LOU SMIT: What's your first recollection
8 then just before the police come? And just before
9 the police come what were you doing?
10 JOHN RAMSEY: Well, I'm sure I started to
11 check some of the areas, like the refrigerator and
12 just trying to check this area?
13 LOU SMIT: Did you ever check this area,
14 the butler's kitchen?
15 JOHN RAMSEY: I don't remember
16 specifically looking there, no. I might have, but
17 I don't remember.

(SNIP)

0160
24 LOU SMIT: Do you remember specifically ever
25 going out this door, the butler door?

0161
1 JOHN RAMSEY: That morning?
2 LOU SMIT: Yes.
3 JOHN RAMSEY: No, I did not. I know I did
4 not.
.

June 1998 John Ramsey Interrogation by Lou Smit and Mike Kane (Butler Kitchen)

0160
5 LOU SMIT: Do you remember anyone going out that
6 door?
7 JOHN RAMSEY: I don't.
That door, from time
8 to time, I'd find wide open because if one of the
9 kids would go out they'd leave it open. But in the
10 normal course of activity, I remember going down
11 there. And I think on a couple of occasions I went
12 door and the door was just wide open or unlocked.
13 LOU SMIT: Is it problem with the door or
14 is it a --
15 JOHN RAMSEY: No. I think it's just in
16 our house kids would come and go out of every
17 orifice and place and that was one of them.

(SNIP)

0541
6 LOU SMIT: I am going to show you
7 another bat. It's photograph number 410. This
8 was found in a different location and I will
9 show you a picture of that bat.
10 JOHN RAMSEY: Um, it's hard for me
11 to tell whether it's similar, but --
12 LOU SMIT: Do you know what area of
13 the house that is?
14 JOHN RAMSEY: Looks like it -- I
15 know what it is. It's -- it is there it is
16 here -- it's probably right in here.
17 LOU SMIT: The area of the north
18 window?
19 JOHN RAMSEY: Right.
20 (MULTIPLE SPEAKERS.)
21 JOHN RAMSEY: Right. This down
22 spout came down right there, right there -- no,
23 over here. Well, yeah, it was here. But that's
24 definitely in this area.
25 LOU SMIT: Do you ever recall

0542
1 seeing a bat there?
2 JOHN RAMSEY: No, that doesn't
3 belong there. When we played baseball we played
4 right out here, because that's the only place
5 you could hit a ball, and that yard kind of
6 stretched back this way. But you know, I don't
7 know why there would be a bat there.

(SNIP)

0548
1 JOHN RAMSEY: That was the side of
2 the house nobody went to.
It was in the
3 wintertime. You know, when we went in the yard
4 it was spring, summer, fall. No reason
5 whatsoever to be in there in months. If ever.

0058
21 TOM HANEY: And then after that you
22 said he checked this other door, that door on
23 the south side between the study and the
24 kitchen?
25 PATSY RAMSEY: Yes, I think he did

0059
1 that.
2 TOM HANEY: Would you just indicate
3 a line then indicating his travel from the
4 garage door to the--
5 PATSY RAMSEY: He went to check
6 that door and then checked this door.
7 TOM HANEY: Okay. Is there more--
8 PATSY RAMSEY: Or vice versa, you
9 know, I think he might have even have gone down
10 to this door.
11 TOM HANEY: Did you say see him go
12 down there or was your feeling or you remember
13 him going down that way?
14 PATSY RAMSEY: I just kind of -- I
15 mean, I was just out of my mind, I am crying, I
16 am crying, I am stammering, and he is like
17 walking around everywhere, like checking -- sort
18 of checking around.
19 TOM HANEY: And you think he
20 checked that door?
21 PATSY RAMSEY: I think he went down
22 there.
23 TRIP DeMUTH: Why?
24 PATSY RAMSEY: That's just, this
25 house has so darn many doors, you know, just to

0060
1 see if that was left unlocked or something or
2 maybe I don't --
3 TRIP DeMUTH: Take a moment and try
4 to remember what it is you remember about him
5 going down there.
6 PATSY RAMSEY: I just seem to
7 remember him walking down the stairs. Because I
8 don't know that I actually saw him, you know,
9 but I vaguely remember him --
10 TRIP DeMUTH: You do have a memory
11 of him going down the stairs towards the butler
12 kitchen?
13 PATSY RAMSEY: I think so. I
14 can't say for sure, but I think so.

(SNIP)

0061
10 TOM HANEY: Did he ever tell you
11 that he checked that butler door?
12 PATSY RAMSEY: No.

(SNIP)

June 1998 Patsy Ramsey Interrogation by Thomas Haney and Trip DeMuth (Butler Kitchen)

0342
24 TRIP DEMUTH: Okay. Sixty-nine.
25 PATSY RAMSEY: Down to the butler kitchen

0343
1 area, the coat rack that I had set up for the party. A
2 tray, yeah. I don't know. Here is the door in there.
3 TRIP DEMUTH: You said --
4 PATSY RAMSEY: I opened that to take --
5 TRIP DEMUTH: To take a picture?
6 PATSY RAMSEY: Was it locked, do you know?
7 TRIP DEMUTH: Yeah. I can't recall whether
8 it was.
9 PATSY RAMSEY: Okay. I don't know.
10 (inaudible).
11 TOM HANEY: Seventy-one.
12 PATSY RAMSEY: Okay.
13 TRIP DEMUTH: I want to ask a question before
14 we go off the butler area, as long as you are looking
15 at 69 there.
16 PATSY RAMSEY: Right.
17 TRIP DEMUTH: You used to have your painting
18 materials in the butler kitchen; right?
19 PATSY RAMSEY: Right.
20 TRIP DEMUTH: Where were they?
21 PATSY RAMSEY: Right here. Right in this
22 area.
23 TRIP DEMUTH: Just in the central area or was
24 it off to the side?
25 PATSY RAMSEY: Well, this wasn't a real big

0344
1 space. So it had the easel kind of set up right there
2 and the sink was there to wash, and the (inaudible)
3 area.
4 TRIP DEMUTH: You had a paint tree also, a
5 tray, or I don't know what you call --
6 PATSY RAMSEY: It was like a little utility
7 carrier with paint in it and stuff.
8 TRIP DEMUTH: Do you remember when you moved
9 those items?
10 PATSY RAMSEY: Right. Linda did. I asked
11 her to take them to the bedroom.
12 TRIP DEMUTH: Okay. And do you remember when
13 she did that?
14 PATSY RAMSEY: Well, she did it prior to the
15 party on the 23rd because we wanted to hang coats here.
16 I don't know exactly the day she did it, but --
17 TRIP DEMUTH: Do you know where she moved
18 them to?
19 PATSY RAMSEY: Down here in the basement, I
20 think, you know, kind of like sort of in this area.
21 TRIP DEMUTH: Okay.
22 TOM HANEY: Well, there is a -- I think maybe
23 a quick little look at the tray with some brushes in it
24 in a minute. In that tray of brushes what would you
25 have had in there?
